The Project

Following the launch of our Dynamic VMS Totem – a large-scale visual message system –four have been installed at Heathrow Terminal 4 to show vital information to help drivers select the right car park for their needs.

The Dynamic VMS Totems are large industrial LCD monitors that have been designed and developed with APT Skidata in response to customers wanting to see real-time data and information at the point of entry, and so improve their visitor experience.

The Totems can also be used to display other dynamic information such as an active tariff structure or space availability. Thanks to the display’s integrated graphics accelerator, the Totem display can be sub-divided to include a combination of promotional material, advertisements and free live web feeds such as news, or weather – or at airports it could present flight information.

Real time data is of particular importance for airport parking, as an Nigel Young, Sales Director at APT Skidata explains:

“Airports offer multiple options for travelers with drivers normally choosing the best option for them depending on the duration of their stay and the cost per hour or per day. So it is essential that drivers have this information clearly available to them before entering the car park.”

At Heathrow Terminal 4 three 32-inch Totems have been installed at the three entrance lanes of the short stay car park and a single 46-inch Totem covers the two lanes of the Business car park. The Totem’s VMS display interfaces with a Skidata Data Central to seamlessly extract and display the active tariff structure.

The displays are manufactured using the very latest in high-resolution colour display panels, housed within stainless steel IP67 enclosures with an impact resistant polycarbonate screen panel protection cover to finish the assembly.

“Working on a project in such a high profile location really showed how our all angle approach to digital signage can shine through. We combined our knowledge of outdoor hardware screen manufacturing, along with software development to build a reliable and robust solution.”
