How lift and learn technology and digital displays are changing the way we shop

At inurface media, we help retailers create experiences that resonate with their customers. Combining Lift & Learn technology with digital displays is an example of one of the exciting tools we’ve implemented in stores to achieve this.

Whether you’re shopping for tech, beauty products, or even your next pair of trainers, Lift & Learn can bring product information to life in an engaging way for the customer

But what is Lift & and Learn technology and where can it be used? Here’s a closer look at what Lift & Learn is, how it integrates with audio visual solutions, why it works so well, and how it can be used in various retail settings.

What Is Lift & Learn Technology?

Lift & Learn is a general term that we use to describe technology that connects physical products with digital information. To put it simply, if a customer were to walk in a shop and pick up an item from a shelf or display, with lift and learn tech. sensors could detect the motion and trigger specific content on a nearby screen for a customer to see.

 This content could include:

  • Product features and benefits.
  • Side-by-side comparisons with similar items.
  • Demonstration videos or tutorials.
  • Reviews or ratings from other customers.
  • Offers, bundles, or promotions.

How does Lift & Learn work?

Lift & Learn technology uses various types of sensors, such as weight, RFID, or motion detection, to identify when a product is picked up or interacted with. These sensors work seamlessly to trigger engaging, product-specific content on a nearby LED or LCD screen.

What are the different types of lift & Learn technology:

Weight-Based Lift & Learn

These systems use weight sensors to detect when an item is picked up or placed back down.
How It Works: A weight-sensitive plate is placed under the product. When the weight changes, it triggers the associated content.

Presence-Based.

Presence-based systems rely on proximity or motion sensors to detect when a customer interacts with or picks up an item.
How It Works: Sensors monitor the item’s location and trigger content when they detect motion or a change in positioning.

RFID

These systems use RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification) technology to track and register items when placed on a designated plate or platform.
How It Works: Items are fitted with RFID tags. When the item is placed on or removed from the plate, the system identifies it and displays relevant information.

Pick-up based.

Pick-up based systems use sensors directly on or around the item to detect when it’s lifted from its position.
How It Works: The system is designed to recognise movement when a product is physically lifted, triggering the associated digital content.

Why Use Lift & Learn?

1. For Engaging Customers

Retail spaces are becoming more interactive, and customers expect more than just a row of products on a shelf. Lift & Learn catches their attention and keeps them engaged by offering information beyond what they can see on the shelves.

2. For Educating Shoppers

As shoppers, we want to make informed decisions, especially when it comes to expensive tech, beauty products, or even food. Lift & Learn provides the details shoppers care about – whether that might be the difference between two laptops or the anti-aging properties of a skincare product.

3. To Boost Sales

To put it simply – when a customer fully understands the value of a product, they’re more likely to buy it, and Lift & Learn helps that happen!

4. To Save Time

Customers don’t always want to wait for a sales assistant to explain things. Lift & Learn puts all the answers in front of them instantly, freeing up staff to focus on other tasks.

5. To Collects Valuable Insights

Retailers can see which products get the most attention, how long customers engage, and which types of content drive sales. These insights are helpful when it comes to refining your in-store strategy!

Where can Lift & Learn technology be used?

Lift & Learn is flexible and adaptable, making it effective across industries. Its ability to connect the physical product with digital content ensures it’s relevant and impactful in any retail setting.

We’ve previously installed Lift & learn tech into footwear giants – Dr Martens in their Carnaby Street store to help customers and visitors find out the specific features of their boot range. The project involved RFID tags in the sole of the shoes, which, when placed on to the designated plate, would display the information on a screen behind.

We’ve also worked with Boots hearing care, to help implement  lift and learn technology into a number of their stores. In this instance, the lift and learn in question uses pick-up based technology to trigger informational content about certain hearing aid products when a customer picks up the hearing aids.
